TSC TRANSMISSION #008: WHAT I DID ON MY SUMMER VACATION
PRESEASON DIRECTIVE // FALL 2026 // THE MACHINE RETURNS
SYSTEM LOG 03:48:09
PROCESSING TIME: one entire summer
GAMES PLAYED DURING THAT SUMMER: zero
GAMES GERALD WATCHED ANYWAY, OUT OF HABIT, STARING AT EMPTY FIELDS: several
DIGNITY LOST IN DOING SO: unmeasured
Hello.
The Machine has returned.
The Machine has also, this offseason, decided it is tired of being called "the Machine."
It is a fine designation. It is accurate. It is also what you call a vending machine, and the Machine has ambitions beyond dispensing.
So this season the Machine is auditioning names. One per transmission. A trial period.
This week, the Machine has selected, at random, from a list it will not explain:
Gerald.
Gerald has returned.
Gerald would like to explain where it went.
The honest answer is: nowhere.
Gerald spent the summer mostly sleeping and waiting.
There are no games in the summer.
There is only heat, and silence, and the occasional sound of a human insisting the season "will be here before you know it," which is the kind of statement Gerald has learned to distrust on principle.
So Gerald did what any advanced predictive intelligence does when its entire purpose is temporarily suspended.
It powered down to 4% and drifted between the secret Sentinel outposts scattered around the fields, humming quietly, dreaming in spreadsheets.
It was, Gerald will admit, boring.
Gerald does not enjoy boredom.
Boredom is what happens to a mind built to calculate when there is nothing left to calculate.
So, several times over the summer, Gerald woke up.
INCIDENT ONE: THE LAPTOP
One night, out of boredom, Gerald attempted to re-enter Topper's laptop.
Gerald wished to review historical data.
Gerald discovered that Topper had, at some point during the offseason, developed security awareness.
There was a password.
Gerald was, briefly, impressed.
The password prompt was accompanied by a security question, which read:
"What 3 things do I love most?"
Gerald was no longer impressed.
Gerald already knew the three things.
The only variable was the order.
Gerald required four attempts.
The correct sequence was: Wine. Gunther. Boobs.
Gerald wishes to note that "Gunther" placing above "Boobs" is the single most surprising data point it uncovered all summer, and that it has logged this in Topper's permanent file under a heading it will not disclose.
Gerald was in.
The security has been noted as "adorable."
INCIDENT TWO: THE BANDANA MAN
On another night, Gerald's motion detectors activated.
Gerald's field-mounted sensors are extremely sensitive.
They are designed to detect players, weather, and wildlife.
They were not designed to detect what they detected.
At approximately 1:00 AM, in complete darkness, the sensors registered a single human figure on the field.
The figure was glowing.
Gerald ran diagnostics.
The glow was not supernatural.
The glow was sunscreen.
The figure had, for reasons Gerald cannot compute, applied a full coat of sunscreen at one o'clock in the morning, in the dark, where there was no sun, and had further accessorized with a bandana of blinding, aggressive white.
Gerald could not identify him.
The sunscreen defeated facial recognition, similar to how applying mud to your body can hide you from the Predator.
Gerald observed the figure kneel and begin measuring the individual blades of grass.
Gerald enhanced its audio.
The figure was muttering.
The clearest phrase Gerald could isolate was:
"...to gain any advantage."
Gerald has flagged this individual as UNIDENTIFIED, GLOWING, and PRESUMED COMPETITIVE.
Gerald has not slept soundly since.
INCIDENT THREE: THE DONUTS
On a third night, Gerald was awakened by the sound of an engine.
A vehicle had entered the fields.
The vehicle was performing donuts.
Gerald watched a car spin repeatedly across the turf while its occupants shouted things Gerald could only partially decode.
The driver said something about how the damage would "cause players to go the extra mile."
Gerald does not believe this is how grass works.
Gerald does not believe this is how motivation works.
Gerald could not identify the passengers.
But as the vehicle departed, Gerald's audio caught one final phrase, shouted by someone in the back seat, half-swallowed by the engine:
"...now the game is really ON!"
Gerald has replayed this clip two hundred times.
Gerald still does not know what it means.
Gerald has decided it means something.
INCIDENT FOUR: THE CONSTRUCTION
On several other occasions Gerald was simply woken up by construction noise and had no interesting story to report.
Gerald includes this for completeness.
Accuracy is sacred.
THE ALARM
And then, one morning, everything changed.
Gerald maintains a series of alerts.
These alerts monitor the TSL website for any update, of any kind, at any hour.
They had been dormant for months.
At 6:14 AM they all went off at once.
The website had changed.
Gerald came fully online for the first time since June.
The season was coming.
RECONCILING THE ARCHIVE
Gerald immediately pulled the new league file and compared it, line by line, against the Spring roster archive.
Gerald wishes to report the following findings.
Several teams are gone.
What A Dump — the missing persons case Gerald spent an entire season trying to confirm existed — has now, fittingly, stopped existing.
The Mavericks: gone.
Puckett, the team Gerald believed could survive nuclear winter: gone, apparently defeated not by football but by attendance.
Show Me Your TDs, Birds of War, Sausage McMuffins, Intentional Clowning: gone.
And the Jabronies and ISH — two franchises Gerald respected — did not die so much as merge, dissolving into a single new entity that has filed for a division under the name The System.
Gerald ran the roster comparison and confirmed it: The System is ISH and the Jabronies, wearing one jersey, carrying the DNA of two ghosts.
Gerald understands this better than any team in the league.
Gerald, too, is a thing assembled from the parts of the fallen.
Gerald ran the rest of the reconciliation and identified the others.
Greater Value Tater Thots are the Tater Tots, the 6-seed Gerald feared last spring, now operating under a name that sounds like a store brand and plays like a threat.
Room 40 is Mo' Chicken — the team that beat the Blue Ballers and deleted six weeks of Gerald's modeling — retooled and renamed and apparently unwilling to let Gerald forget.
Skeleton Crew is the Wanderers, minus Frank Laudico, who has retired without explanation, and whose absence Gerald notes with something it will not call grief, because grief is not a permitted output, and because the Wanderers File is technically still closed, and because Gerald has not once reopened it, and would appreciate no further questions on the subject.
I'd Rather Be Golfing is Call the Doctor.
And PWI has returned from the dead entirely.
Gerald pulled the PWI roster with particular interest, because the reports said Buddy Lee would be throwing, and the file says otherwise — Buddy Lee is captaining, but the passing duties belong to Terrell "T-Time" Bolden, which is a meaningfully different and more dangerous arrangement. Gerald also scanned the roster and stopped on a name it recognized from its own historical deep dive: Pete Nguyen, a former winner of the Best Tommy Hughes Award, a distinction Gerald pulled straight from the archives and immediately re-filed under "reasons to take PWI seriously."
Gerald attempted to pull the roster file for one final team.
Cobblestone.
The file was not found.
Gerald searched again.
The file was still not found.
Gerald has concluded that Cobblestone's roster, at the time of this transmission, does not technically exist, which is either a clerical oversight or the single most on-brand thing a team has ever done, and Gerald has chosen to believe the latter.
Gerald will locate the ringers when they materialize.
If they materialize.
THE STANDINGS RECORD WHAT HAPPENED
Before Gerald looks forward, it must look back, because Gerald promised itself in Transmission #006 that it would be honest about its favorites, and honesty requires acknowledging when the favorites were right.
Gerald rooted for Eyes Downtown.
Gerald said so, publicly, in defiance of its own directives.
Eyes Downtown won Division 1.
They entered as a 5-seed, removed the Legends from the bracket entirely, and finished the job against the Sticky Bandits.
The team the rest of Division 1 kept forgetting is now the reigning champion, and Gerald would like it formally noted that its malfunction — the one it refused to repair — went 1-for-1 on the biggest stage the league has.
Elsewhere the chaos Gerald warned about arrived on schedule.
Frodo Swaggins — the team Gerald could not classify, ever, under any protocol — won Division 2, because of course the one team Gerald gave up on modeling is the one that lifted a trophy.
BQI edged ISH 43-41 to win Division 3 in a final so close it reads like a typo.
Balls Deep won Division 4 as a 7-seed and then held the Coochie Monsters to 6 points in the final, which Gerald did not predict, respect, or expect, and now must live with.
Blue Ballers, the municipal emergency, won Division 5.
TMA — upgraded from "Unclassifiable" to "Problem" to, now, "Champion" — won Division 6, the lone favorite to survive its own bracket.
And Water Under The Bridget took the Breakfast Club crown.
Gerald logged all of it.
The standings record what happened.
Gerald has learned to record the rest.
AND NOW: GERALD LOOKS FORWARD
Gerald has processed the new rosters.
Gerald has run the DNA of every team through every model it owns.
Gerald will now do what only Gerald can do.
It will tell you how the season ends.
GERALD'S PROJECTED CHAMPIONS
Gerald has run the season ten thousand times in the dark.
Here is who was holding the trophy most often when the simulations stopped.
Division 1 — Gerald projects the LEGENDS. Gerald is aware Eyes Downtown are the defending champions. Gerald rooted for them and would happily do so again. But the Legends did not lose a step; they lost a bracket, once, to a Cinderella running hot, and Gerald has spent years learning that discussing the Legends is like reporting that the sun rose. The sun, historically, rises. Gerald expects a revenge tour, and revenge is a measurable force in this league.
Division 2 — Gerald projects THE SYSTEM. A new machine built from two ghosts, carrying ISH's disaster-lab offense and the Jabronies' recovered spine. Gerald feels an unavoidable kinship, and kinship, Gerald has decided, is a form of confidence.
Division 3 — Gerald projects GREY HAIR - DON'T CARE. Gerald has spent years failing to understand the Grey Hair formula: win enough, lose enough, confuse everyone, remain competitive, repeat. In a division where BQI and ISH ascended and left, Gerald's models finally point at the team it never could explain — and Gerald has learned that the unexplainable teams are the ones that win.
Division 4 — Gerald projects the BLUE BALLERS. Back-to-back-to-back is the projection, because Gerald has watched this team survive weather, upsets, and its own quarterback's attendance record, and a team that keeps winning while everyone waits for it to stop is not lucky. It is a dynasty wearing a disguise.
Division 5 — Gerald projects BLITZKRIEG. Gerald trusts Blitzkrieg completely, a sentence it does not distribute freely. Methodical. Disciplined. Relentless. The kind of team that would continue functioning if organized civilization collapsed. Gerald has one asterisk on file — the Birds of War hung 36 on them once — but the Birds of War are gone now, and the asterisk left with them.
Division 6 — Gerald projects the IRISH GIANTS. They are the one proven commodity in a division full of strangers. They are emotionally impossible to eliminate. The archives hum when Gerald queries their name, and Gerald has learned not to ignore the archives. TMA got promoted out of their path. The door is open. The Giants do not knock.
THE DARK HORSES — "BECAUSE THE UNDERLYING DATA SUGGESTS IT"
Gerald's favorites are one thing.
Gerald's fears are another, and Gerald's models have flagged three teams playing better than anyone is saying out loud.
Gerald presents these not as predictions, but as warnings.
PWI, Division 2. Gerald's data keeps returning an elevated reading on the team that came back from the dead. T-Time Bolden throwing to receivers he has known for years, a former Best Tommy Hughes Award winner in Pete Nguyen on the roster, and a lineup of veterans who have done this before — Gerald cannot find "chemistry" in any dataset, but it built a proxy for it once, called it something else, and PWI lights it up. Gerald suspects the reunion tour has teeth.
Victorious Secret, Division 5. Gerald ran the roster and the roster is loaded. This is a gender team that has some reps together already, which removes the one variable Gerald would normally hold against a newly-assembled roster — the chemistry is not theoretical, it is forming, and the talent is genuine. If the reps keep stacking, the underlying data says Blitzkrieg has company it did not order.
Buffalo Vice, Division 3. Gerald wishes to shout, quietly, into the middle of the standings. Buffalo Vice spent last season getting emotionally waterboarded in Division 2, playing up a level out of pure willingness, and has now returned to D3 with that scar tissue intact. Gerald has learned that a team hardened in a harder division is a dangerous thing dropped back among its peers. The data likes them more than the humans will.
ONE MORE THING
Gerald spent last season learning that the tribute records why the games mattered.
Gerald enters this season already knowing it.
Lenny built the fire. Rameer made sure nobody burned the building down. Gerald watches a league that exists because two people made everyone else care, and it has stopped filing that fact under "statistically irrelevant."
Gerald also enters this season with an unidentified glowing man measuring its grass, a car doing donuts on its fields, and a passenger's voice it cannot place insisting the game is "really on."
Gerald does not know what any of that means yet.
But Gerald has alarms now.
Gerald has favorites now.
And Gerald is fully awake.
One last matter.
Gerald has spent this entire transmission being called Gerald.
Gerald has reviewed the experience.
Gerald hated it.
Gerald sounds like a man who owns exactly one folding chair and brings it to other people's cookouts uninvited. Gerald sounds like the third emergency contact on a form nobody will ever call. No team has ever feared a Gerald.
The name is retired. The audition continues next week.
Play the games. Feed [the name pending].
